Recycling Caribbean Cars to Make Roads
We don’t do enough recycling in the islands, for very good economic reasons that I cannot dispute.  In recycling, economies of scale are paramount, and in small communities its an insurmountable problem.

Nevertheless there are several recycling companies that we have found in the region and we are looking for more to compile a complete list.  One in Trinidad does takes scrap metal, which is my particular concern, especially with regards to old cars and trucks.

I have a theory that if we filled all the potholes in our Caribbean roads with the abandoned wrecks that line them, we could kill two birds with one recycle, so to speak!

Saving Pallets!
Shipping to the Caribbean can yield a great amount of junk in the end, that includes the pallets which were used for steadying precious goods in ones container!

Often these bits of wood are burnt or left to rot on a forgotten end of the property!

Well, save space, save time, save the planet through recycling the junk woods into; chairs or tables for your backyard garden!

Here is how its done ...

as&Air Studios was launched in 2010 when two British design students started messing around with a pile of broken shipping pallets. After many design iterations the duo came up with a simple and efficient design for a folding chair.

Shirt Chairs!
In the Caribbean, bits of clothing worn, washed and torn beyound the 'wearable' mark, tend to clog our shelves while we get over sentiment and decide on the nearest redcross office!

Well, here is one more option : turn them into  chairs!

To create her original T-shirt Chair, Maria Westerberg wove together shirts from forty of the designer’s friends along with other once-treasured textiles to create a colorful mosaic of her personal history.

Smitten with the idea, manufacturer Berhin Studios is now producing the chairs from a mix of colorful fabric pieces leftover from sofa manufacturing.

The T-shirt Chair can also be purchased as a plain frame so you can personalize it with your own worn-out clothes, t-shirts and other textiles. The T-shirt Chair is the winner of the 2011 Green Furniture Award.

For those who prefer wood and timber house construction for its aesthetic, organic and environmental impact there are several solutions.

The most cost effective and the best for its use of common skills already within the existing labour force, are hardwood kit homes and commercial buildings.

This type of factory built, flat-packed and shipped, and reassembled on site, ensures that building time goes from a minimum of 9 months to less than a month.

These pre-packed hardwood kit homes can be reinforced to meet local hurricane construction requirements. Added to which,  hardwood homes survive better in earthquake zones than any other type of construction.

CASAS CURITIBA have been producing quality Brazilian hardwood kit homes and shipping to the Caribbean for more than 30 years.

Milk bottles for furniture!

One innovative caribbean company is focusing on the production of an eco-friendly product, producing eco-friendly outdoor furniture, made from recycled milk bottles!

Founders of PolyWood Inc., discovered they could extrude the pellets of the recycled milk jugs into plastic lumber. That lumber could then be used to assemble outdoor furniture.

“Being Sustainable” Managing Director, Dr Auliana Poon, noted that there is a growing importance in today’s environment on being eco friendly and she is doing her part to promote eco friendliness while producing fashionable and trendy outdoor lounge furniture.

By teaming with Polywood she has created the 'Being Sustainable' line of outdoor furniture made entirely of recycled plastic milk bottles.

Plastic lumber, known as Poly-Wood, has proved to be unaffected by the sun, rain, snow, sleet, wind, saltwater, chlorine and mildew. The very nature of Poly-Wood keeps the color from fading. furnitures are assembled using stainless steel hardware which has an additional protective Xylan coating. Being a nonporous product, the furniture can be left outside year round, no matter the climate.

Regular, easy maintenance with soap and water keeps it clean and enjoyable for countless seasons!

Earthbag Building

Earthbag Construction for Circles and Curved Designs

Earthbag construction is used for several very good reasons but one of them is the ability to create structures that are made up from flowing curves.

These curves can be on the horizontal, such as an elegantly curved wall.  Or they can be compound curves where the structure curves in both the horizontal and vertical plane at the same time, such as a dome structure.

To obtain the beauty of these curves with other traditional building materials used in the Caribbean is difficult.

Masonry can be arranged to create curves and if you are willing to pay for expensive form work it is also possible to create curves with poured concrete.

However most other building materials are much better suited to creating straight vertical walls, and used for the majority of construction projects in the Caribbean.

Architects seeking to relieve their designs from the austerity of hard flat concrete surfaces, could look to the possibility of combining areas of earthbag walling within a traditional reinforced concrete building.  This creates a building that enjoys the benefits of both materials, whilst  also offering  greater flexibility to the design process.

Two Architectural Workplace Designs from the Caribbean Islands
Architectural workplace design for Caribbean office spaces and commercial units is in dire need of lots of fresh creative air blown through it!

Labour Laws in the Caribbean are still somewhat archaic on many islands. They are based on a ‘Workers Charter’ that goes back to 1960s industrial Britain.

Some Labour codes have been updated with a more balanced employee/employer structure, but then it takes more than the letter of the law and its interpretation to change old attitudes and prejudices.

Perhaps we should look to our Caribbean architects and spatial designers to lead the way out of the dark working habits of old, and introduce the light!

We include two fine examples of how this can be done.  These bring shape, colour and the tropical environment together to throughly impact how we work together in a shared space. Continue reading here.

Rammed Earth a Universal Building Method
Rammed Earth a Universal Building Method.

Rammed earth is an ancient building method which has been modernised and technologically revolutionised.

Building with a wall system that is durable like stone and has 50% more R-value than a wooden framed house.

This means that its insulation and thermal properties are such that your house loses 50% less heat or cold air than a wood framed house and more like concrete.

But instead of using expensive concrete, you use local earth and clays.  In other words, save natural resources and money whilst building a home for the family that will last for generations.

A wall made of compacted layers of mixed gravel, sand and clay that is hard like stone.

Add insulation and you have insulated rammed earth, add some cement and you have stabilized rammed earth. For seismic zones, steel reinforcing is added according to engineering specifications.

Quality rammed earth walls are using a material that has been tested for thousands of years in all types of climate conditions, They are dense, solid, and stone-like but also warm and beautiful!

Shoreline Architecture
Shoreline Architecture – two unique designs for two unique islands.

Anguilla, and Virgin Gorda in the BVI, are very similar islands. They are small dry islands, when compared to the bigger islands with high rainfall, mountainous terrain and clothed in tropical rainforest.

The sea and skyscape are thus predominant, and a design for living should encompass these two scapes at every aspect.

The immediate landscape will likely be gardens with natural boulders, cultivated shrubs and small trees, which are themselves only an adjunct to the vast dominating blue spaces of sea and sky. Continue reading here...

Earthbag Building
Earthbag building fills a unique niche in the quest for sustainable architecture.  Since the walls are so substantial, they resist all types of severe weather, the kind we get in the Caribbean, earthquake, flood and hurricane!
They can be erected simply and quickly with readily available components, for very little money. Earthbags have the tremendous advantage of providing either thermal mass or insulation, depending on what the bags are filled with.

When filled with soil they provide thermal mass, but when filled with lighter weight materials, such as crushed volcanic stone, perlite, vermiculite, or rice hulls, they provide insulation.

In the islands, a volcanic stone called tarrish or tarris is found everywhere and regularly used on the roads as a cheap alternative to gravel and sand. This would provide another good source of fill for a Caribbean earthbag house.

Consider a minimalist design approach that emphasizes indoor comfort while respecting detail, innovation, and sets performance beyond any technology limitations!

Many of your designs already have the right building blocks in place and are ready to activate dormant concrete floors as thermal energy storage and radiant heating/cooling panels.

Termobuild is the sleek, sophisticated air-driven radiant cooling and radiant heating solution that replaces traditional bulky and wasteful radiant heating/cooling systems in buildings without the use of wet systems.

We work with architects that are on the lookout for new ways to enhance building projects particularly when it comes to increasing comfort, energy efficiency, safety, sustainability and cost effectiveness.

Our method enables radiant heating and cooling of buildings using basic off-the-shelf pre-cast products and HVAC equipment in a dramatically more efficient manner.  This innovative method transforms dormant concrete floors into “smart floors” that act as rechargeable energy storage batteries, storing and releasing heating and cooling naturally upon demand.

The creative force behind Scabetti is the English design duo, Dominic and Frances Bromley. The organic forms and tactile, high quality English made materials, are characteristic of their work.

Since their company began with the launch of the Amoeba candlestick and small dish in 1999, Dominic’s sculptural forms have been an iconic addition to the world of design.

The introduction of Drawn to the Light and its critical acclaim gave Frances and Dominic the confidence to continue their work with bone china.

"Bone china is such a beautiful material with a strong English heritage. It has different qualities exhibited in different lighting conditions.

It’s translucency when cast very finely, is most appealing and has really been the inspiration for our move into lighting design."
