British Virgin Islands / BVI

The British Virgin Islands, usually shortened to BVI, covers a scattering of 36 islands and many more rocks and cays, that lay about 30 miles east of Puerto Rico.  The land is generally steeply sloping, with a thin layer of soil over underlying rock, with the few flatter areas tending to be already developed.

With the BVI becoming a major offshore financial centre in the early 1990's the island went through a sustained boom that saw the construction of many up-market properties for the many lawyers and accounts relocating to the BVI to work in the industry.

The majority of houses constructed in the BVI are designed to have two or more levels, with the lower level being built into the hillside and often providing space for a large reinforced concrete cistern to store water harvested from the roof of the house. The houses typically enjoy excellent views due to their elevated locations, with many of the more recent properties having swimming pools.
