Dominica is an English speaking island of 290 square miles area laying in the Windward Islands, laying between the French Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe and not to be confused with the Spanish speaking Dominican Republic to the north, near Cuba.

Dominica is a mountainous volcanic island with many rivers and waterfalls. The coastline of Dominica is mainly high rocky cliffs, with few beaches and much of the population of 73,000 inhabitants centred in the flatter coastal areas and river valleys.

Dominica's economy is mainly agricultural products and tourism, who are accommodated in numerous small guest houses, boutique hotels and eco-resorts.

With little settlement of Dominica by ex-patriots until very recently, the property market is mainly for land, with very few quality homes available.  Land prices tend to be fairly affordable, with the exception of beachfront land, which is not much cheaper than the more expensive Caribbean islands, due to scarcity.  Quality homes are more affordable than other islands, but still not cheap, as their construction is reasonably expensive and requires serious project management to achieve good standards from the low skilled workforce.

Finding suitable locations for construction in Dominica can be difficult, and construction often requires the house to be built on sloping ground, avoiding areas known for land slippage and  flood plains.
