Martinique is a French speaking island, laying between the islands of Dominica to the north and St. Lucia to the south. Martinique which is a volcanic island with a mixture of mountainous terrain and undulating plains, has a landmass of 436 square miles and is home to 405,000 inhabitants.

The island has a good number of sandy beaches and protective bays for yachting and holds an annual race for "gommiers" which are hollowed out tree trunks.

The economy of Martinique is mainly tourism, as Martinique has been established for a considerable time as a tourist destination. The island also has a small industrial sector and grows sugar, mainly used in local rum production, plus it exports bananas and other crops to France.

The Martinique foreign property market caters mainly for buyers from France and offers a wide range of modern apartments, villas and larger properties in the mid to upper prices for the Caribbean, with property prices normally set in euros. Properties tend to be varied and come in all shapes and sizes, with a fair smattering of eccentric and eclectic house designs amounst the more traditional villas and modern condo buildings.

Construction is mainly confined to the fairly level terrain in the centre and southern parts of the island and along the coastal plains.
