US Virgin Islands / USVI

Prior to the arrival of Columbus the Virgin Islands were peopled by the Ciboney, Carib, and Arawaks. The islands were named by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage in 1493 for Saint Ursula and her virgins. Over the next two hundred years, the Virgin islands were passed between Spain, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Denmark-Norway.
It was the Danish who finally sold the islands to the United States of America in the Treaty of the Danish West Indies of 1916. They are classified by the UN as a Non-Self-Governing Territory, and are currently an organized, unincorporated United States territory. The U.S. Virgin Islands are organized under the Revised Organic Act of 1954, and have since held five constitutional conventions.
O the three main islands, St John is the greenest island, literally and figuratively. It consists mainly of national parks and white sand beaches, andleads the way in environmental preservation, with limited development and several low-impact tent-resorts for lodging. Many cruiseships and big tourist and residential resorts make St Thomas the most commercialized island. St Croix is well to the south of the other islands in the Caribbean sea, and has a mix of rainforest, sugar plantations, old forts and underwater shallow reefs.  It is the least tourism orientated of the islands.  The total land area of the territory is 133.73 square miles (346.4 km2).
The population is approximately 106,000 mostly composed by those of Afro-Caribbean descent.
